Hunterland

Description Hunterland by Dana Claire

Supernatural meets Nancy Drew in Dana Claire’s New Young Adult Novel Hunterland

Liam Hunter has warded off hungry vampires, slayed monstrous beasts, and put agonized spirits to rest since he could hold a stake. When trouble comes through the Hunterland message board, alerting them that nurses are dying at high schools across Wisconsin in a string of fishy “suicides,” the Hunter family hits the road to save the
day.

The trail leads to Falkville Falls, where Liam clashes with Olivia Davis, whose maddening family seems inexplicably embroiled in this haunting mess. Olivia has always mothered her little sister, Pepper. But when the Hunter family opens her eyes to the hidden underworld of real monsters prowling the dark, she realizes she can’t protect Pepper from this newest threat by herself. Can the two families work together to uncover who or what is responsible before the next murder, or will this vicious death cycle have no end?

Grab your stakes and your rock salt. Monster hunting class is in session.

Excerpt Hunterland by Dana Claire

Besides two humble pickup trucks, the only other vehicle in the gravel lot was an abandoned bus with broken windows, sitting lopsided on two flat tires by the dumpster. As dusk fell, the lights hanging over the entrance switched on, flickering like a candle’s flame. This place screamed vamp feeding ground. No prying eyes. No town ties. No one to look for the missing. Sure, a vamp couldn’t just walk in and attack, but the tree-lined perimeter, inadequate lighting, and dead roadway made for easy pickings. Dad had the right idea.

We were about to enter through the attached coffee shoppe’s door when a woman’s scream echoed around the corner. I took off in a full-on sprint.

“Liam, wait,” Dad yelled.

My leather jacket moved with my screaming muscles. The serum shot I’d finally given myself this morning coursed through my bloodstream, and I flew, my legs pushing to their ultimate limits. The bite of cold air against my skin woke my senses as I charged into the clearing behind the building. The cry came again, and I pinpointed the direction.

My boots churned up frozen mud as I raced into the thick trees. Shadows darted in front of me—here one second, gone the next. I twisted my head to follow, and a hand grabbed me in a bone-crushing grip. Claws pierced my jacket, stinging my skin, and launched me clear across the wood line. I face-planted into the freezing, hard ground, reminding me of my one miserable attempt at ice skating. The impact jammed my spine, like I’d taken a hammer between the shoulder blades, and clacked my teeth together. I rolled to distribute the blow and stood.

Ten feet away, Dad raised a stake, eyes dilated and shining from the adrenaline high. I started toward him, but he yelled, “Stop!” With his head, he motioned to the ground between us.

Skidding to a halt, I stood over a figure in the grass.

We were too late.

Bee Gone

An obnoxious drone in a bee hive tries to wrest power from the Queen Bee by scheming with a less-prosperous hive. Donnie Drone  creates chaos  when his underhanded scheme succeeds. Donnie Drone will look familiar. The actions recounted in the parable are recent history. This is a quick, amusing read with wonderful illustrations. All of us should take our responsibility to vote seriously and elections must be fair, not hacked. Go to the polls for ALL elections.

My Thoughts Bee Gone: Political Parable by Connie Corcoran Wilson

A drone bee tries to wreak havoc on the hive and wrestle power from the Queen.  It is apparent just by looking at the cover who the culprit “bee” is, Donnie.

This graphic novel parallels today’s U.S. politics in a humours and entertaining way.  It reminds of the book ‘Whose Boat is This Boat’ by The Staff of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. It is a quick read and reminds us that we need to take our democracy seriously and put some real thought into who we want as a leader.  There is too much at stake, no matter what our political affiliations and beliefs are! I give it 5 stars for the lough out loud moments, illustrations, and message.

I received the ebook for my honest review.

Bee Gone: Political Parable by Connie Corcoran Wilson

Devil Comes to Town by Paolo MaurensigA Devil Comes to Town by Paolo Maurensig

Thanks to Sabrina Greene of World Editions, I am giving away one print copy of ‘A Devil Comes to Town’ by Paolo Maurensig.

Description Devil Comes to Town by Paolo Maurensig

A small village full of aspiring writers + The devil in the form of a hot-shot publisher = A refined and engaging literary fable on narcissism, vainglory and human weakness

Wild rabies runs rampant through the woods. The foxes are gaining ground, boldly making their way into the village. In Dichtersruhe, an insular yet charming haven stifled by the Swiss mountains, these omens go unnoticed by all but the new parish priest. The residents have other things on their mind: Literature. Everyone’s a writer—the nights are alive with reworked manuscripts. So when the devil turns up in a black car claiming to be a hot-shot publisher, unsatisfied authorial desires are unleashed and the village’s former harmony is shattered. Taut with foreboding and Gothic suspense, Paolo Maurensig gives us a refined and engaging literary parable on narcissism, vainglory, and our inextinguishable thirst for stories.

Praise Devil Comes to Town by Paolo Maurensig

“This nested narrative is an entertaining exploration of the manifold powers―creative, confessional, corrupting―of fiction.” ―Publisher’s Weekly

“Maurensig gives us a masterfully constructed gothic horror story designed to keep aspiring writers up at night. A macabre little Alpine horror story elevated by masterful storytelling and language.” ―Kirkus
