Ziggy Marley and Family Cookbook by Ziggy MarleyZiggy Marley and Family Cookbook by Ziggy Marley

I have always liked Ziggy Marley’s music so when I saw that he also had a cookbook out, I was curious.  It was presented in an email to me with an offer for a free copy.  Part of the pitch said it has “many vegan and vegetarian recipes.  Normally, I will only accept cookbooks that are vegan or at least vegetarian but I made an exception for this one.

The book is beautiful with colorful ingredients and photos of many of the dishes.  Just look at the cover to get a glimpse of the beauty! However, I was disappointed that there were not as many vegan and vegetarian recipes as I was lead to believe.  I know some people consider fish to be vegetarian however; real vegetarians will tell you that “if it can stare back at you, it’s not vegetarian.”  Since this book has many fish recipes, I think that is where the confusion came from.

That said, there are a few veggie recipes and there are some that can be tweaked to become vegetarian or even vegan, if you know how.  My favorite recipe is the Coconut Curry Squash Soup.  It was already vegan, so no tweaking required. It was so flavorful that I have already made it twice.  The lental Soup was good as was the Tofu In Coconut Carrot Curry. There are also some nice salad and smoothie recipes.

Seeing photos of some of the fish and chicken dishes were a bit off putting to me but I did know the risk I was taking accepting this cookbook so I certainly can’t take points off for that.  Over all, it is a solid cookbook with some good recipes.  It would be especially good for someone transitioning to vegetarian.

I received the colorful hardcover book for my honest opinion.

Vegan: Asian Vegan Recipes for a Dairy Free Raw Vegan Lifestyle by Sam KumaVegan: Asian Vegan Recipes for a Dairy Free Raw Vegan Lifestyle by Sam Kuma

I am always happy to try new vegan cookbooks so when I was offered this ebook, I was happy to accept.  This is my honest review.

First, I feel the need to point out that this is not a “raw” vegan cookbook by any stretch of the imaginations.  So, I dodn’t think the word “raw” belongs in the title!  It is very misleading and anyone who follows a raw vegan diet would be very upset that they paid for a non-raw cookbook!  That said,Bill and I do not follow a raw diet, just vegan.  We both love Asian food, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian, especially! Asian encompasses a lot of the world.  Don’t expect this cookbook to cover it all.  It is mainly Chinese and a bit Japanese.

It’s unusual to see breakfast recipes in an Asian cookbook, so to see them in this cookbook was a unique surprise. I have the same breakfast every morning and like to keep it lite so I didn’t try any of the breakfasts yet.  However, some of the dishes work for lunch, like the Breakfast Wanton Soup.

I made the Salt and Pepper Tofu listed in appetizers but think it would also be a good main dish with some brown rice.  I also made the Hot and Sour Soup.  The two made a nice dinner for the two of us with leftover soup for lunch the next day.  I look forward to trying the Asian Chili Tofu, also in the appetizers section. Another night I made the Tofu Udon.  I used firm tofu instead of the silken tofu because Bill doesn’t like silken tofu. It was good! I also made the Sriacha Fried Rice for another dinner.  I’m a cook who like to make several dishes for one meal unless we have friends over.  We can’t eat as much as we use to and it just takes up too much time.

One of my favorite vegetables in Asian recipes is eggplant so I made the Spicy Eggplant.  The recipe did not specify what variety of eggplant to use so I use Japanese, my favorite kind.  It was delicious! There were a couple Indian inspired recipes but I would have like to have seen more.  I look forward to trying more of the recipes.

Vegan: High Protein Vegan Cookbook by Sam KumaVegan: High Protein Vegan Cookbook by Sam Kuma

This vegan cookbook is small in size at only 99 pages but big on taste and inventive recipes.  It doesn’t include much information about veganism for those new to it however; they include a link to a free ebook titled ‘Vegan Living’.  The author claims that it provides all the benefits of going vegan and challenges involved.

Vegan: High Protein Cookbook is broken into the following recipe types:

Smoothies
Breakfast
Salads
Soups & Chili
Appetizers
Main Courses
Side Dishes
Deserts

Many of the recipes include supplement protein powders which, I don’t like to use.  However, for most you can just leave them out.  I just don’t like to use supplements and prefer to get my protein and vitamins by eating a balanced diet.  I also think unless you are an athlete, you really don’t need the excess protein of supplements.  However, for those worried about getting enough protein this is a great cookbook.  I wish it had been around when I first went vegan!

All of the recipes are easy to make and most are quick, under 30 minutes.  It’s great for those on the run and have little time to cook.

I recommend this cookbook to beginner vegans who are worried about getting enough protein and to seasoned vegans who just want some new quick and easy recipes to add to their repertoire.

I received the ebook version of this book for my honest review.
