Rainbow In Her Pocket

Description Rainbow In Her Pocket by Amanda Jayne

Have you ever seen a sheep standing tiptoe on the ears
of a very tall giraffe while a crowd looks on and cheers?
And have you seen an owl helping them to tug
a rainbow from the sky, like a multi-colored rug?

This is the story of Mala the rhino who can’t help feeling blue after her friend moves away. Her friends, an owl, a sheep and a not-so-humble giraffe get together with sun and create a crazumptious plan to show Mala that blue is as beautiful as all the other colors. This colorful story of friendship, love and loss will delight children while encouraging them to embrace their emotions in a healthy way.

My Thoughts Rainbow In Her Pocket by Amanda Jayne

Narrated by a giraffe named Arnie, ‘A Rainbow In Her Pocket’ is about a rhino named Mala.  Her good friend, the gorilla went to the zoo.  She missed him so much she became depressed (blue).  She tried everything she could to get rid of the blue but just couldn’t shake it.  Her good friends, including Arnie got together to figure out how to help her. They even consulted with a yew tree and the sun.  The sun had the best idea of all.

I can’t tell you anymore as I don’t want to risk spoilers.  This picture book is brightly illustrated and beautifully written by Amanda Jayne.  It teaches children that all feelings are good, even sadness.  I love the way she does it through color to help children really learn the concept.

I don’t know how she could better address the gorilla going to the zoo however; gorillas don’t just walk out of the forest and go to a zoo willingly, as depicted in the book.  They are kidnapped and taken from their family.  I believe children should know that truth.  The practice of kidnapping animals and putting them in zoos for human’s entertainment and even in the name of science is cruel.

Despite that one scene in the book, I highly recommend it.  I think it does a great job of teaching that all feeling are normal, even sadness.  Perhaps parents can use the gorilla going to the zoo as a discussion with their child.  There is certainly a lot to discuss about colors and feelings. I give ‘A Rainbow In Her Pocket’ 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Secrets Abound in Missing Lake

2018 Independent Press Awards: Distinguished Favorite  for Teen Fiction

In the third book in the acclaimed teen fiction, ‘Missing Lake’ series, Luke Houser is approaching his sixteenth birthday as well as summer vacation in the tiny mountain community of Missing Lake. He continues to try to find balance between real life with friends and their social requirements with the secret world of the mystical dragons.

Luke faces challenges with one of his beloved sled dogs as well as with Zagros, the majestic silver dragon, when he has to make choices that could lead to potential disaster. As the summer unfolds, so do more secrets in all aspects of Luke’s life and he tries to make sense of everything happening around him.

This is the third book in the series which shares Luke’s awkward and yet charming journey through adolescence with his beloved team of huskies, his friends near and far, and two dragon eggs that are going to hatch in the middle of nowhere.

My Thoughts Secrets Abound Missing Lake by Tanya Fyfe

I have a secret…I have been in love with dragons for as long as I can remember.  I

Bill & Suanne with Peter Yarrow

played Peter, Paul, and Mary’s song ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ to the point that the vinyl wore out.  I still love the song.  You may have noticed the photo of Bill and me with Peter Yarrow on my Facebook.  He was here in Vancouver, promoting his new book, ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’.  Bill and I were the only adults in the store without children.  LOL!  We had to meet Peter Yarrow! I love all of his music but he is the one who sparked my imagination with dragons!

When Tanya Fyfe approached me to review her book ‘Secrets Abound Missing Lake’, I jumped at the chance.  I only had to see the dragons on the cover, to want to read it.  I normally don’t choose books to read from the cover.  I also only very occasionally read children’s and young adult books.

‘Secrets Abound Missing Lake’ lives up to the cover!

Luke is a teenager who has lived through his parents’ divorce and being moved around.  They lived in Vancouver, BC, Canada, where his mother still lives but then he moves with his father to Bismarck North Dakota.  He settles in and makes friends only to move again with his father and step-mother, Jackie to Missing Lake, Montana.  The move was to raise sled dogs and compete in competitions.  It was also to give Jackie a less stressful veterinary practice.  Luckily, Luke is very likeable and makes new friends again.

Luke also is chosen by a dragon, Zagros to be his friend and overseer.  Zagros and his mate Tabatha are also about to become parents, when their two eggs hatch.  There are only a few people who know about the dragon’s existence and it must be kept a secret to protect them.  Luke can’t even tell his best friend or mother.  Luckily his father and Jackie know about them so he has someone to talk to about them.

‘Secrets Abound Missing Lake’ is a delightful coming of age story.  It is full of well written characters that jump off the page.  The descriptions of Vancouver, Bismarck, and Missing Lake really set up the story.  I totally got lost in this book and didn’t want it to end.  This is book three in the ‘Missing Lake’ series and I can hardly wait for book 4.  It can easily be read without reading the first two books but I plan to read them next because I loved this book so much!

If you love coming of age stories, dragons, or just excellent storytelling, ‘Secrets Abound In Missing Lake’ Is a must read!

I received the ebook for my honest review.

Secrets Abound in Missing Lake by Tanya Fyfe

Christmas CatsBook Description:

The Christmas Cats Encounter Bats is a Seuss-ical tale for young children which builds upon the morals of the first two Christmas Cats books (The Christmas Cats in Silly Hats and The Christmas Cats Chase Christmas Rats). Book One (The Christmas Cats in Silly Hats) stressed that twin sisters—or anyone— should learn to play together nicely. When one twin bit the other on the nose, it was a sign that a story about playing together nicely would be useful. Learning to cooperate is important for everyone.

Book Two, The Christmas Cats Chase Christmas Rats, urges acceptance and advises against prejudice. “It’s best to be open and trusting and kind, and always to keep an open mind.” Learn to accept others in a non-judgmental, open-minded fashion.

Book Three, The Christmas Cats Encounter Bats urges everyone to honor life in all its forms. Love and accept all God’s creatures. Some animals—(puppies and kitties come to mind)— are popular with nearly everyone. Others (spiders, lizards, bats, etc.) may not seem as worthy, but all are small cogs in the universe. Bats serve a very useful purposes in God’s grand scheme. All life should be valued. The bats of story three are just as deserving of respect and have as much of a right to life as any other creature on the planet.

My Thoughts:

There are strange sounds coming from the school bus parked at a local mall.  The Christmas Cats are called to investigate and they find bats.  ‘The Christmas Cats Encounter Bats’, is the delightful sequel to the ‘Christmas Bats’ series.  It is quite Dr. Suess like in rhyme and is sure to entertain young children and teach them important lessons on treating others kindly.  Even to those who are different to you.  Sure, bats are not cute and furry like some animals but they have an important purpose on this earth.

I highly recommend the entire series and not just for Christmas.  I can be enjoyed any time.

I bought this ebook after reading book II in the series, The Christmas Cats Chase Christmas Rats‘.  The opinions are my own and honest.
