Ziggy Marley and Family Cookbook by Ziggy MarleyZiggy Marley and Family Cookbook by Ziggy Marley

I have always liked Ziggy Marley’s music so when I saw that he also had a cookbook out, I was curious.  It was presented in an email to me with an offer for a free copy.  Part of the pitch said it has “many vegan and vegetarian recipes.  Normally, I will only accept cookbooks that are vegan or at least vegetarian but I made an exception for this one.

The book is beautiful with colorful ingredients and photos of many of the dishes.  Just look at the cover to get a glimpse of the beauty! However, I was disappointed that there were not as many vegan and vegetarian recipes as I was lead to believe.  I know some people consider fish to be vegetarian however; real vegetarians will tell you that “if it can stare back at you, it’s not vegetarian.”  Since this book has many fish recipes, I think that is where the confusion came from.

That said, there are a few veggie recipes and there are some that can be tweaked to become vegetarian or even vegan, if you know how.  My favorite recipe is the Coconut Curry Squash Soup.  It was already vegan, so no tweaking required. It was so flavorful that I have already made it twice.  The lental Soup was good as was the Tofu In Coconut Carrot Curry. There are also some nice salad and smoothie recipes.

Seeing photos of some of the fish and chicken dishes were a bit off putting to me but I did know the risk I was taking accepting this cookbook so I certainly can’t take points off for that.  Over all, it is a solid cookbook with some good recipes.  It would be especially good for someone transitioning to vegetarian.

I received the colorful hardcover book for my honest opinion.

Polaroid: The Magic Material by Florian KapsPolaroid: The Magic Material by Florian Kaps

Florian ‘Doc’ Kaps was fascinated the magic of Polaroid.  Before digital photography the only way to get a instant printed photo was from an instant camera.  It was actually developed in 1940 but I remember my family first got one in the late 60’s.  I still have some of the photos from that camera but they are quite faded.

In ‘Polaroid’ talks about how the camera and technology was developed and the models that were out in the marketplace.  He also talks about how he revived film production in 2008 with The Impossible Project.  Demand is growing for instant photography again today.

Packed with lots of instant photos, Polaroid: The Magic Material would make a excellent coffee table book and a great gift for any photography lover!  In fact, I just got a copy for someone in our family for Christmas.  I can’t say whom, in case they are reading this review. LOL! This is a really fun book!

I received a beautiful hardbound copy for my honest opinion.

Description of Rebel With A Cause: The Doc Nikaido Story by Bretton Loney

Rebel With A Cause: The Doc Nikaido Story is a compelling account of how Canada’s shameful treatment of Japanese-Canadians during World War II impacted one man: the rebellious Dr. Harry Nikaido. Turning his back on material things, Doc practised medicine in small-town Alberta, living a bohemian lifestyle and charging no more for his services than what he absolutely needed to survive.

He paid little or no income tax over his 24-year career to get back at the Canadian Government, whom he never forgave for the forcible resettlement of his family and 22,000 other Japanese-Canadians from British Columbia during World War II. This unique man found a welcoming community and extended family in Bow Island, Alberta after Canada had turned its back on him and branded him an enemy.

Decades may have passed since his death, but for the residents of Bow Island and surrounding area his unique personality, generosity, and dedication will never be forgotten.
