Description of Tudor Brandons by Sarah-Beth Watkins

This fascinating book studies the life and times of Mary Tudor and Charles Brandon, Henry VIII’s dearest sister and his closest companion. Charles rose from being Henry’s childhood friend to becoming the Duke of Suffolk; a consummate courtier and diplomat. Mary was always royalty.

At first married to the King of France, Mary quickly wed Charles after Louis XII’s death in 1515, against her brother’s wishes. Their actions could have been construed as treason yet Henry chose to spare their lives. They returned to court and despite their ongoing disagreements throughout the years, especially over the king’s marriage to Anne Boleyn, the Tudor Brandons remained Henry’s most loyal subjects and perhaps more importantly, his beloved family.

Bukowski In A Sundress by Kim AddonizioBukowski In A Sundress by Kim Addonizio

Thanks to Jessica Fitzpatrick of  Viking/Penguin Books, I am giving away one copy of  ‘Bukowski In A Sundress’ by Kim Addonizio

Description of Bukowski In A Sundress by Kim Addonizio

A dazzling, edgy, laugh-out-loud memoir from the award-winning poet and novelist that reflects on writing, drinking, dating, and more

Kim Addonizio is used to being exposed. As a writer of provocative poems and stories, she has encountered success along with snark: one critic dismissed her as “Charles Bukowski in a sundress.” (“Why not Walt Whitman in a sparkly tutu?” she muses.) Now, in this utterly original memoir in essays, she opens up to chronicle the joys and indignities in the life of a writer wandering through middle age.

Addonizio vividly captures moments of inspiration at the writing desk (or bed) and adventures on the road—from a champagne-and-vodka-fueled one-night stand at a writing conference to sparsely attended readings at remote Midwestern colleges. Her crackling, unfiltered wit brings colorful life to pieces like “What Writers Do All Day,” “How to Fall for a Younger Man,” and “Necrophilia” (that is, sexual attraction to men who are dead inside). And she turns a tender yet still comic eye to her family: her father, who sparked her love of poetry; her mother, a former tennis champion who struggled through Parkinson’s at the end of her life; and her daughter, who at a young age chanced upon some erotica she had written for Penthouse.

At once intimate and outrageous, Addonizio’s memoir radiates all the wit and heartbreak and ever-sexy grittiness that her fans have come to love—and that new readers will not soon forget.

Praise for Bukowski In A Sundress

“A poet and writer with decades of accolades, Addonizio . . . comes across as the outsider-insider, wine-swilling but clear-eyed. . . . Accessible and unpretentious, sexy and funny, boastful and vulnerable, she’s the girlfriend who’s willing to dish, whether about ‘How to Try to Stop Drinking So Much’ or ‘How to Succeed in Po Biz,’ which ends, beautifully, with the command: ‘Don’t be such a goddamned little baby.’ This is a woman who, no matter the costume, you want to hear.”—The Village Voice

“Addonizio is brash and tender, pissed off and funny, well armored and wounded. Emotions, bravado, and empathy run high in her award-garnering poetry and novels, and she now taps into the wellsprings of her creativity in this rollicking and wrenching memoir-in-essays. . . . Always vital, clever, and seductive, Addonizio, a secular Anne Lamott, a spiritual aunt to Lena Dunham, delivers shock and awe, humor and pathos with panache.”Booklist

“Filled with Addonizio’s usual jaunty wit, sarcasm, and irreverence. This ‘Emily Dickinson with a strap-on,’ as she calls herself, is ruthlessly honest and writes so well that whatever she’s excoriating or dissing or musing about becomes immediately fascinating. . . . An unrelenting, authentic, literary midnight confession.”—Kirkus Reviews

Gift: Chronicles Tucker Littlefield by Tegon MausGift: Chronicles Tucker Littlefield by Tegon Maus- Review

Tucker Littlefield is a self professed “lair, thief, and con-man”.  However, when it comes down to it, he tends to do the right thing, even if it starts out for the wrong reasons.  In a tavern filled with people from all over, Tucker recounts his adventures.

Tucker attended a birthday party and the King’s niece is kidnapped.  Tucker see’s it and tries to stop it, to win the King’s favor but he can’t.  Elizabeth’s governess, Eloise is frantic and blackmails Tucker into going on a dangerous journey to save the little girl.  Enron, a Jonda (giant) also goes on the journey.

Before Tucker and Enron barley get started, Enron is badly wounded but Tucker saves him and Daneba, a shaman for the Jonda turns him into a soul Bearer.  They soon encounter the Norha, “a cannibalistic tribe that lives under a volcano” and their leader, Tahki.  Enron, with the help of other Jonda, along with Tucker have to fight for their survival.  At the same time, they find Elizabeth there, as a prisoner of the Norha and try to save her.

Later, Tucker and Eloise develop a bit of a romance which turns out to be sweet and funny at the same time.  I don’t want to risk giving away spoilers but I bet you are wondering if Elizabeth gets saved and if Tucker and Eloise hook up.  Sorry, my lips are sealed.

I don’t usually read fantasy but I do love Tegon Maus’s writing.  He writes across genres, you could even say he is a genre bending author.  In his case, this is a good thing!  He forces his fans to experience different genres with his unique twist.  He has not steered us a fowl!  In all of his books, he keeps the laugh out loud humor going, while masterfully juggling his quirky characters and plot!  You cannot go wrong with a Tegon Maus book!

In ‘The Gift: The Chronicles of Tucker Littlefield’ Tegon Maus really makes his world building skills shine!  He got me to read high fantasy and actually love it! I highly recommend it and cannot wait for the sequel!

5/5

I received the ebook version for my honest review.

About Tegon MausGift: Chronicles Tucker Littlefield by Tegon Maus

Tegon Maus was raised pretty much the same as everyone else… devoted mother, strict father and all the imaginary friends he could conjure. Not that he wasn’t friendly, he just wasn’t “people orientated”. Maybe he lived in his head way more than he should have, maybe not. He liked machines more than people, at least he did until I met his wife.

The first thing he can remember writing was for her. For the life of him he can’t remember what it was about… something about dust bunnies under the bed and monsters in my closet. It must have been pretty good because she married him shortly after that. He spent a good number  of years chasing other dreams before he got back to writing.

It wasn’t a deliberate conscious thought, it was more of a stepping stone. His wife and himself had joined a dream interpret group and we were encouraged to write down our dreams as they occurred. “Be as detailed as you can,” we were told.

He was thrilled. If there is one thing he enjoys it’s making people believe him and he likes to exaggerate. Not a big exaggeration or an outright lie mind you, just a little step out of sync, just enough so you couldn’t be sure if it were true or not.  When he writes, he always write with the effort of “it could happen” very much in mind and nothing, he guarantees you, nothing, makes him happier.

He has consistently placed in the top 3 in 189 writing contest in a variety of genres and has been featured in magazines a couple of times to raise money for Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
